Read John 19 Jesus Crucifixion

So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, It is finished! And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit. (John 19:30 NKJV)

Jesus knew having all things been accomplished through His life and ministry; He was ready to give up His life. He cried of thirst and was given sour wine dipped in hyssop just to patch His lips. Hyssop would take the thoughts of any Jew back to the saving blood of the Passover lamb. Jesus fulfilled what the prophet had spoken. The last wine He partook was sour a picture of bitterness that He bore our sins.

Jesus final word It is finished! tetelestai meaning paid in full. It was the cry of a winner, a conqueror and a victor. Jesus had finished the eternal purpose of the cross. An awesome spiritual transaction took place. God the Father laid upon God the Son all the guilt and wrath our sin deserved, and He bore it in Himself perfectly, totally satisfying the wrath of God for us. The types, promises, and prophecies were finished. The sacrifices and ceremonies of the priesthood were finished. His perfect obedience was finished. The satisfaction of Gods justice was finished. The power of Satan, sin, and death was finished. The work of redemption completely done. Now the covenant of blessing is free to flow to all the people.

Bowing His head speaks of a peaceful act, like lying down on a pillow to sleep. Life was not taken from Him. No one took Jesus life from Him; He gave up His spirit. As Jesus said, I lay down My life that I may take it again. No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. (John 10:17-18) He gave up His spirit. He yielded His spirit and left the body.

Prayer: Lord You took the suffering and sacrifice for my sin. Restore that fellowship I have with God. I might have life eternal. I am forgiven, alive in my relationship with You and part of the Body of Christ. I will follow Your model of yielding when passing on to glory as You had.
