JOHN [30 AUGUST 10 SEPTEMBER DAY 243 - 254]
INTRODUCTION
John also known as the disciple whom Jesus loved. An eye witness of what Jesus had done (John 21:25). He wrote with a clear purpose, these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. (John 20:31)
Chapter 1 Jesus pre-existence. Jesus was the embodiment of the word who was with God and is God. This word becomes flesh and tabernacled among us. John met Jesus and let others to become His disciples. They acknowledge Jesus with seven titles through their encounters with Him.
Chapter 2 12 Jesus miraculous signs and controversies. Chapter 2-4 Jesus showed through four Jewish institutions as pointing to Himself. He turned water into wine at the wedding feast showed the generosity of Jesuss kingdom (Isaiah 25:6) The cleansing of the temple points to His sacrificial death and raised on the third day. His interaction with Nicodemus points to a new life through been born again. He referred to Himself as the living water in Jacobs well. Chapter 5-10 In the four Jewish feasts Jesus claimed who He is. As the Lord of the Sabbath in the healing of the lame man on Sabbath. He fed the multitude and claimed that He is the bread of life at Passover. He claimed as the Light of the world illuminating presence of God at the feast of Tabernacles alluding to the pillar of fire that led the Israelites in the wilderness. Final feast is Hanukkah, rededication claim He is the true temple and one with the Father. Chapter 11 12 the final sign of raising Lazarus from the dead as His own resurrection.
Chapter 13 17 Jesus, final word. He washed the feet of His disciples to speak of Gods self-giving love. A symbol of what He was going to do. Jesus spoke of His departure and coming of the Holy Spirit as of necessity. He spoke of His oneness with the Father and His disciples to remain in that love. Gods love will transform. The Spirit will empower them to love and bear witness. They will triumph even in midst of persecution as Jesus has overcome the world.
Chapter 18 - 21 Jesus death and resurrection. He responded I Am when the guards came looking for Him. His trials before the high priest then the governor standing on His claim, King of Israel. His power was epitomized by the cross. The resurrection account of Mary meeting Jesus. He then meets His disciples to receive the Spirit and commissioned them. Disciples went fishing and caught nothing. Jesus revealed Himself by asking them to cast their nets on the other sides. He spoke to Peter and commissioned him to be leader feeding His flock. Then John to remain as author.
