ALPHA & OMEGA
Read Revelation 1 The Revelation of Christ
I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, says the Lord, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty. (Revelation 1:8 NKJV)
John begins with introduction of Christ and thereafter with affirmation Jesus spoke of Himself. Jesus says, the Beginning and the End. I am the A to Z, Alpha was the first letter of the ancient Greek alphabet, and Omega was the last letter. A repeated declaration by the elders (Revelation 11:17), the angel of the waters (Revelation 16:5) and near the end of the revelation, in Revelation 22:13.
The idea behind these titles for Jesus is that He is before all things and will remain beyond all things. He also has authority over everything in-between. It reflects His eternal nature and His unchanging presence (Hebrews 13:8). Jesus has this eternal nature just as much as God the Father does. This means that Jesus has a plan for history, and He directs the path of human events toward His designed fulfilment. Our lives are not given over to blind fate, to random meaninglessness, or to endless cycles with no resolution.
Jesus is for in John He often addressed as the I Am right even from the time of Moses. He is the who is the present, who was the past and who is to come the future. This provides the outlines to the Book of Revelation. It covers the churches of the present, the history that had taken place and the future from chapter 4 to 16 Vision of Coming Events.
He is the Almighty emphasis on Gods sovereignty, It translates the ancient Greek word pantokrater, which literally means the one who has his hand on everything. It speaks of the great sovereign control of Jesus over everything past, present, and future.
Prayer: Lord, I can centre my life around You. My compass and direction, my past, present and future are in Your ordained path. Grant that I might discover each step of the way and live to fulfil and acknowledge it for Your glory as a living witness.
