THE GREAT GAIN
Read I Timothy Relating to Wealth
Now godliness with contentment is great gain. (I Timothy 6:6 NKJV)
The ambitious and self-centred leaders and teachers were striving in disputes and arguments over doctrines holding this a form of godliness as well as motivated by wealth. Instead, Paul wrote what really is profitable is true godliness with contentment.
Godliness is a life reflecting God-likeness. Yet one can have a form of godliness but denying its power as Paul warns will come in the last day, But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away! (II Timothy 3:1-5)
Contentment is the effect of godliness. Being contented does not mean being complacence. Contentment is been able to accept whatever status with gratitude, Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things, I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. (Philippians 4:11-12). When we focus on what we have in Christ rather then what we don't have of the world will fill our hearts with gratitude.
The pursuit of wealth is normal and healthy when its done in appropriate ways. It should never be done out of greed but in godliness. Consider the burden from possessions. But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. (I Timothy 6:9-10) Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, I will never leave you nor forsake you. (Hebrews 13:5) The presence of the Lord is with us.
Prayer: Lord I am contented in You as my all Sufficiency. I can abase and abound for I am not looking to the external for my contentment and satisfaction. My pursuit is not the condition and possession for contentment but You.
