Reading Acts 2 Pentecost!

Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. (Acts 2:3-4 NKJV)

In obedience to Christs instruction, they went back to Jerusalem and waited upon the Lord for the outpouring of His Holy Spirit as promised them. While tarrying the supernatural phenomena took place.

The tangible present of the Holy Spirit came in the form of tongues of fire upon each of them. The Holy Spirit came in the form of the dove when Jesus was baptized. The dove speak of gentleness and fire speaks of power, purification. This is an excellent illustration of the principle that the filling of the Holy Spirit is not just for abstract power, but for purity. The word sat has the idea of a completed preparation, and a certain permanence of position.

In response to the filling of the Holy Spirit, those present (not only the twelve apostles) began speaking languages they were never taught, foreign to them yet understood by the foreigners as been praising God. It was a miraculous sign for both the speakers and audience. This was the evidence of the power of the Spirit giving utterance.

This outpouring of the Spirit was a fulfilment of prophecy of Joel 2 as Peter affirmed, And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your youg men shall see visions, Your old men shall dream dreams (2:17)

Prayer: Lord as You have filled me with the HoI will tap on Your power in life and service.
