THE LIVING WATER
Read John 7 Son of Man glorified
On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water. But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified. (John
The occasion was the feast of tabernacles. An occasion of joy as the priest fills his pitcher and pours it flowing to the ground, "with joy you will draw water from the wall of salvation (Isa. 12:2) the crowd would dance to celebrate God's gift of water when Moses struck the rock (Numbers 20:11). Who would have dared to speak about lack or thirst on such a day as this?
Jesus gave the dramatic invitation to drink. He saw the religious and those wandering seekers are in dire needs of spiritual and eternal life than their ancestors in the wilderness for the natural and temporal one. and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ. (
The Scripture has said of the satisfaction that be upon those who believed, The Lord will guide you continually, And satisfy your soul in drought, And strengthen your bones; You shall be like a watered garden, And like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail. (Isaiah
He speaks of the Holy Spirit. His offer to quench thirst goes beyond the one in chapter 4. It is not merely satisfaction of one's own soul ('a well of water springing up into everlasting life', 4:14) but refreshment flowing out to others; so that the believer becomes a source of refreshment for those around him.
it was still future 'for the Holy Ghost was not yet given'. 'Because Jesus was not yet glorified'. Here is the fresh glory of Christ revealed. Once glorified, He will send this Spirit to bring these things about. In fact, the Spirit will then replace His testimony on the earth.
Prayer: Lord, I thirst after You. I drink of You; the living water. I received Your Holy Spirit. He is the Refreshing within my soul. From within me flow this life of joy and hope to those around.
