INTRODUCTION

The name Job means hated or persecuted, Where is (my) Father?. It is probably written during the patriarchal period. Job was a real person as mentioned in Ezekiel 14: 14 and James 5:11 which emphasizes his righteousness and perseverance. Four main parts:

Chapters 1-2: The Prologue. Jobs trials. Three sections to it. First, his physical suffering. Second, spiritual reality though an upright man; the accuser brought him suffering. Third his mental agony.

Chapters 3 26. The Dialogue. Conversations between Job and his friends. There are three cycles of speeches by these three men, Eliphaz, Bildad and Zophar. First chapters 3 -14. Second chapters 15-21. Third chapters 22-26. Job's three friends argued that God is always just and supposed that Job was ill because of his evil deeds. The assumption if you are good; you will be blessed and wicked will be punished.

Chapters 27 - 41 The Monologue. Chapters 27 to 31 Job speaks in his poetic fashion talks about his past, his past life experiences, and his present calamity, his pain and sorrow. Chapters 32 to 37 are six chapters spoken by a young man, Elihu. He gets angry at the three friends for bloviating against Job. Elihu explained the truth to Job and his friends that God acts justly and sufferings may be to provide warning of the future and build character. Chapter 38 - 41God has a monologue. God, who states that the reason for his suffering should not be asked because of the incomprehensibility and sovereignty of His ways. He ends the debate and restores Job.

Chapter 42 The Epilogue. God is sovereign and just. "The Lord restored Job's losses when he prayed for his friends. Indeed, the Lord gave Job twice as much as he had before." He doubles up on everything except kids. He gets 10 more kids. It concludes in a narrative with God vindicating him and have him to pray for his friends.
