Read I Kings 3 Solomon Asks for Wisdom

"Therefore give to Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people, that I may discern between good and evil. For who is able to judge this great people of Yours? The speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing. (I Kings 3:9-10 NKJV)

How often have we asked God for answer to our immediate needs? Like a student seeking for good result and business man for wealth. Oftentimes without realising we are expecting the natural immediate gratification, for power, prosperity, possession, position and popularity. Theres nothing wrong but whats more crucial than these temporal wishes?

God is generous to give Solomon what he wants. We note how about his prayer. First, his confidence of Prayer is in the faithfulness of God. He begins with history not entreaty. He claimed on Gods faithfulness to his predecessor, King David (I Kings 3:6)

Content of Prayer. ...understanding heart to judge Your people, that I may discern between good and evil... (I Kings 3:9) How does God give us an understanding heart? Through His word (Proverb 2:6) and meekness (Psalm 25:9) A discerning heart means also a hearing or obedient. Solomon was asking for the capacity to obey Gods law and distinguish between right and wrong.

Concern of Prayer is the people of God. His motive is out of a sense of great responsibility, he knew his personal limitations to lead Gods people (I Kings 3:7). Solomon must have seen how his father's failures as well his rule to keep the kingdom united. How could he fit in the shoes of his father?

Consequence of Prayer was the pleasure of God. God was pleased that he asked for understanding and a listening heart to discern justice instead of long life, riches or the life of his enemies. This God answered his prayer as well as beyond what he asked for, And I have also given you what you have not asked: both riches and honor, so that there shall not be anyone like you among the kings all your days. So if you walk in My ways, to keep My statutes and My commandments, as your father David walked, then I will lengthen your days. (I Kings 3:13-14; II Chronicles 1:11-12)

Prayer: Father God, let me ask what is Your desire and best interest You have for me. It may not be the immediate or the short term needs but in the light of eternity. Jesus You are my Wisdom and I seek You. Knowing You and to obey You is the fear of the Lord which is my wisdom. I have been trusted with responsibilities thus the privileges and accountability. I will not seek to be defensive to center on self but the interest of others and You.
