Read I Kings 2 Davids Final Instructions to Solomon

And keep the charge of the LORD your God: to walk in His ways, to keep His statutes, His commandments, His judgments, and His testimonies, as it is written in the Law of Moses, that you may prosper in all that you do and wherever you turn; (:3) that the LORD may fulfill His word which He spoke concerning me, saying, If your sons take heed to their way, to walk before Me in truth with all their heart and with all their soul, He said, you shall not lack a man on the throne of Israel. (I Kings 2:3-4 NKJV)

The last few words of a person passing away are of great significance for him and loved ones. This passage was King David's words at his impending death to Solomon.

The Charge - to walk in obedience to Gods commandments. Solomon must take heed in all things pertaining to ceremonial, moral, and judicial matters. For the whole strength and stability of that state was built upon a strict observance of the statutes and commandments of the Lord. The king of Israel was obliged to write a copy of the law kept by him, and read it, and rule according to it, (Deuteronomy 17:18) the law of God furnishes the best rules of government and maxims of policy (Deuteronomy 4:6)

The Consequences - will be a prosperous and happy reign as it is God's word of promise concerning the kingdom of David in its succession, confirmation and establishment.

The Condition - to the fulfilment of God's promise comes when his children take heed to their ways in the sincerity and integrity of their hearts to walk in, according to the word of truth.

The Commitment - is to do so whole heartedly but in the most cordial manner, with the strongest affection and zeal; with all eagerness and earnestness; with their whole hearts engaged in every duty performed by them:

The covenant promises unconditional yet will not be a reality in their disobedience one to succeed him in the throne; this was absolute, and had its fulfilment in the Messiah, Jesus from the line of David whose throne is forever (Luke 1:32). We take care of our responsibility while God brings the outcome.

Prayer: Father God, You are the Law, Truth and Life. Your charge is clear that I walk in You and I received the power to live in obedience to Your word as the surest way to see Your promises come upon the generation after me. Enable me to say and write my last words in recounting your faithfulness through my commitment.
