INTRODUCTION

This book was written during the divided kingdom. It aims to show that leaders must be chosen by God and to walk in alignment to His will. It addresses to all those living in trouble times and wanting to understand Gods participation in history.

It has three main sections. The first Chapters 1 to 10 Davids Triumphs, second Chapters 11-20 Davids Trials and third, Chapters 21-24 Davids Troubles

Chapters 1 to 10 Davids Triumphs. Davids triumph is seen not only in his skill, wisdom and warfare but also his humility. He wept over his enemy Saul. He wept when his soul mate, Jonathan died. He wept over Abners death who was his enemys chief of staff. He consulted God over the conflicts Israel had with the enemies. He won many battles as well over the Ammonites and Arameans. They took the city of Jerusalem in a successful battle (2 Samuel 5). He showed compassion to those who honor the late king and provided care for Mephiboseth. He was affirmed and acknowledged as the king of Judah then the whole of Israel shortly after the assassination of Ishbosheth.

Chapters 11-20 Davids Trials. In an attempt to cover up his sin with Bathsheba; he plotted Uriahs death. God used prophet Nathan to expose his sin. He repented and was forgiven. The consequences however let to his family and nation rebelled against him.

Chapters 21-24 Davids Troubles. Much of the events here occurred during the first and second sections. A record of a famine (Chapter 21), plague (Chapter 24). Both of these were caused of his sin of pride when he ordered a census of his subjects to boast of the size of his kingdom. Through Gods discipline, David casted himself at the mercy of God. He was sustained and restored.

With the merciful Thou wilt show Thyself merciful, and with the upright man Thou wilt show Thyself upright. With the pure Thou wilt show Thyself pure; and with the forward Thou wilt show thyself unsavoury. And the afflicted people Thou wilt save; but Thine eyes are upon the haughty., that Thou mayest bring them down. (2 Samuel 22:26-28)
