SPREAD WING
Read Ruth 3 Ruth follows Naomis plan
And he said, Who are you? So she answered, I am Ruth, your maidservant. Take your maidservant under your wing, for you are a close relative. (Ruth 3:9)
Boaz was a relative of Elimelech. He came to know Ruth's background and condition. He welcomed her and showed her favour to work in his field.
Naomi now instructed Ruth to approach Boaz by night and requested that he exercises his responsibility as a kinsman redeemer (Ruth 3:11-13). This was the customs of those days (Deuteronomy 25:5-6). Ruth takes heed to the counsel of Naomi who knew who Boaz is, a kinsman redeemer.
Ruth identified herself and made a simple request. She began with these words "take your maidservant," Ruth appealed for mercy, with humility and submission. She presented herself as Boaz's servant. Her posture of been a servant, dependence and in need went beyond her dignity and shame to lie near at Boaz feet. How much it reminds us of coming to God with a contrite spirit and broken heart.
The phrase, "spread the corner of your garment over me." This was a culturally relevant way to say, "I am a widow, take me as your wife." God uses the same terminology in relation to Israel: When I passed by you again and looked upon you, indeed your time was the time of love; so I spread My wing over you and covered your nakedness. Yes, I swore an oath to and entered into a covenant with you, and you became Mine, : Says the Lord GOD (Ezekiel 16:8)
She asked for his covering as to represent that she be taken as his bride.
A picture of Christ our Kinsmans Redeemer. He met us in our night. He causes us to see who we are when we encounter Him. The law as the first kinsman cannot save us but Christ gave Himself to redeem us. So are we longing to be the bride of Christ? For He has first wooed us to Himself just as Boaz did in his generosity, love and care shown to Ruth when she first came to wean in his farm.
Prayer: Father God, You initiated Your love towards me by giving me Your Son and I am drawn. Lord Jesus, You are my Redeemer. I came in dependence on Your acceptance. You have chosen me Your bride, I will constantly live under Your covering.
