Chapter 1 Love Resolved. Ruth was a Moabite who married Mahlon, eldest son of Elimelech and Naomi. It happened during the period when the time of Judges. The Midianites and Amalekites have devastated the land of Israel (Judges 6:2-6; Ruth 1:1) It was a time of famine. Many fled to the nearby land of Moab. Among them were Elimelech and his wife Naomi, their two sons, Mahlon and Chilion with their wives, Ruth and Orpah respectively (1:1-5). Both their husbands died. Ruth made a resolution to follow her mother-in-law, Naomi to her land, her God.
Chapter 2- Love Responded. Ruth came to Boaz's field to collect grain. She projected herself gracefully. Boaz noticed Ruth. He knew her story and he loved her. He paved the way for her to be blessed by instructing his workman. Naomi came to know about Boaz and knew him as the kinsman. She planned for Ruth to get closer to Boaz. We see the providence of God throughout this incident.
Chapter 3 - Love Requested. Naomi instructed her how she should dress, what she should do. Ruth proposed to Boaz to provide her the covering for life.
Chapter 4 - Love Rewarded. Boaz's proposal and planned to betroth Ruth. However, he had to first keep the option open to her closer relative. The latter agreed to pay for the property but not to marry Ruth. So, Boaz redeemed the land and married Ruth. Boaz is a type of Christ and a redeemer. Identify with us through incarnation, willing as not one takes from Him and He was able. Her family became Israel's royal family. Both King David and Jesus belonged to this family. It was a prophetic genealogy.
