III JOHN [21 DECEMBER DAY 356]
INTRODUCTION
III John is a personal letter from "The Elder" addressed to "beloved Gaius". John wrote this epistle likely from Ephesus around 90-95 A.D. It provides portraits of three different men.
The confirmation of Gaius (:5-8). John was glad to hear that Gaius taught the true Christian message and he looked after other Christians. These Christians were travelling to teach God's message elsewhere. And Gaius helped them.
There were some problems in Gaius's church. John wanted to come so that he could help Gaius.
The condemnation of Diotrephes (:9-10) Diotrephes hang-up was that he loved to have recognition, attention, and be the center of attraction. He had to rule or ruin. There is generally one like him in every church who wants to control the church and the preacher. He was guilty on five charges: (1) must occupy the leading place; (2) actually refused to receive John; (3) made malicious statements against the apostles; (4) refused to entertain the missionaries (apparently, he wanted to do the teaching); (5) excommunicated those who did entertain the missionaries (he tried to be the first Pope). He was Diotrephes, the dictator.
The commendation of Demetrius (:11-12) whom good reports were given by many who knew him. He adorned the doctrine of Christ. Others testified to his character. He was true to the doctrine.
The Concluding remarks (:13-14) John stating that he would have written a longer letter, but he was coming to visit his friend, Gaius.
