AN OVERFLOWING LIFE
Read Colossians 2 Christ above all Doctrines
As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving. (Colossians 2:6-7 NKJV)
The believers have received Christ is in the aorist tense. It is an experience once for all. Therefore; they should walk in Him in the present as the Holy Spirit empowers them.
First to walk in Him is a command as it is in the present imperative. Walking is a metaphor for the manner in which a person is living. This includes actions, attitudes and motivations. He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked. (I John 2:6). It is walking in the light, in wisdom, in newness of life by faith and in the Spirit worthy of the Lord.
Second, be rooted in Him is in the passive voice indicating He planted us. We remain rooted by abiding in Him through a devotional life of word, prayer and fellowship. But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law, he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper. (Psalms 1:2-3)
Third, built up in Him, is a present passive plural participle indicating it is something that is occurring to believers corporately in the present time. The metaphor of a building. It is making him firm, secure, stable and hence established building it. We were built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus Himself as the chief cornerstone. (Ephesians 2:20). God gives spiritual offices and gifts for the purpose equipping and building up of the saints (Ephesians 4:11-16) Peter expressed this same idea of us as are being built up as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices (1 Peter 2:4-5),
We are then being established in the faith; a passive voice of the participle indicates that it is God who establishes us. The outcome is abounding with thanksgiving.
Prayer: Lord, You have taken residence in my life. You are my Source. I have received Your life. Now by Your Spirit I walk in Your life as rooted in Your love. I am built up in You. You are establishing me in my faith leading me to a life of thanksgiving.
