INTRODUCTION

Paul together with Barnabas established several churches in the Roman province of Galatia during his missionary journey (Acts 13:14-14:23). Some Judaizers came in teaching these Gentile Christians discrediting Paul. They were told to be circumcised and keep the law and for their salvation. Paul writes to the Galatians believers refutes such teachings about AD 49 from Antioch. He reminds the believers of their faith and freedom in Christ.

Chapters 1- 2 The Messenger. Paul defences his apostleship. He wries of his authority and the right to defend. The revelation he received and his conversion were authentically from God. He was affirmed by the council at Jerusalem. He confronted Peter when the latter deviated to compromise.

Chapters 3 - 4 The Message. Gospel of Justification by Faith. Paul refers to Abraham as justified by faith. For the law was not yet given. The law shows sin. It imprisons every one under the power of sin. Positively, the law is like a good teacher that kept Israel in line. However, Israel failed. Christ came, He fulfilled the law for their behalf. Now through Him, the offspring of Abraham are blessed.

Chapters 5-6 The Motivation. Liberty of the Gospel. The Judaizers challenged with how will non-Jews learn God's will without the law. Paul responded that it is through the Spirit. He summarizes how we now live in the Spirit of love and bearing one anothers burden. He contrasts old and the new humanity.
