SETTING APART
Read Acts 13 Pauls First Missionary Journey
As they ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, Now separate to Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them. (Acts 13:2 NKJV)
Whats the natural approach we often adopt for Mission? We see the needs we ask God for workers and we send out those who responded to the challenge and call. Here the church at Antioch takes these three steps:
First, they started by ministering to the Lord. Thats exercising our priesthood of believers. Ministering to the Lord means doing what pleases Him and honours Him worship, praise, prayer, listening to, honouring God. Setting apart of Barnabas and Saul. The Antioch church received the new commission starting a new wave. Receiving a new commission involves the whole congregation.
Second, they fasted. As It is an urgent, significant and bold steps needed they are taking. It is supernatural and spiritual and a sense of total dependence upon God will result His purpose being fulfilled. Seeking God through prayer and fasting are spiritual discipline to listen. Instead of remaining complacent and stagnant the believers in Antioch sought God for direction to spread the Gospel.
Third, tuning in to the Holy Spirit. The call came through the ministry of prophets in the church at Antioch, though it could have come simply through the inner witness of the Holy Spirit.
Fourth, the setting apart. Barnabas and Saul were set apart first to God and then to fulfil the calling. The calling God had for the life of Paul had already been stated in Acts 9:15-16. He is a chosen vessel of Mine to bear My name before Gentiles, kings, and the children of Israel. For I will show him how many things he must suffer for My name's sake. Other prophets and teachers confirm their calling.
Prayer: Lord, I am created for Your purpose. I seek first to minister to You in praise, worship and offering of myself. I will set myself apart to whatever You have commissioned me as a member of Your body to serve in specific area. I accept the witness and confirmation of Your children about my calling as You have directed.
