Read II Kings 2 The passing on of Elijahs mantle to Elisha

And so it was, when they had crossed over, that Elijah said to Elisha, Ask! What may I do for you, before I am taken away from you? Elisha said, Please let a double portion of your spirit be upon me. (II Kings 2:9)

Elisha followed Elijah to the juncture of separation. His persistence pursuit passed number of significant places beginning with Gilgal, Bethel, Jericho then to Jordan. He would not leave even the other prophets were passive about it. Gilgal speaks of circumcision, the cutting away of the flesh which was done in Joshua's day (Joshua 5:8-9) Bethel speaks of communion for it is the house of God (Genesis 28:22), Jericho speaks of conquest (Joshua 6:1-27) and Jordan speaks of consecration as Jesus was baptized (Matthew 3:6).

Elijah was prophetic knowing he was to be taken, as well what Elisha was after. Elijah had served well. He ministered in his personal ministry but also passed on a legacy of training the prophets without reservation. Likewise, those whom God has brought along our path; if we care enough to mentor them to serve as effectively as we did.

Elisha asked for a double portion of Elijah's spirit be upon him. We witnessed many mighty men and women of God in their ministries. There are those we seek to emulate. We desire to serve under their mentorship. However, are we ready to pay the price? Elisha was ready. The latter asked for a double portion of Elijah's anointing to serve. What Elisha asked was a hard thing because Elijah knew he didnt have it. It has to be God to impart. How significant when Jesus prayed, "Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father." (John 14:12)

The mantle was upon him for he knew himself being chosen, called and committed to be faithful. As the account unfold, we noted Elisha did twice as much as what Elijah had done. He healed the water, caused bears mauled those who mocked him, dealt with Moab's revolt, filling the jars with olive oil, pray for Shunsmmite to have a son, sanctified the pot, feeding of the hundred, caused a dead child to live (2 Kings 4:8-37), made poisonous food safe (2 Kings 4:38-41), cured Naaman, captain of a foreign army (2 Kings 5). He caused the axe head floated, revealed the Arameans' plan and prophesied the Samaria retreat (6-7)

Prayer: Father God, You have brought along my path many great men and women of God. I have wished to minister as they did. Only You can grant me the anointing as Your Spirit dwell within me. I long to stay in tune and be yielded to You.
