Read 1Samuel 12 Samuels Address at Sauls Coronation

For the LORD will not forsake His people, for His great names sake, because it has pleased the LORD to make you His people. Moreover, as for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the LORD in ceasing to pray for you; but I will teach you the good and the right way. Only fear the LORD, and serve Him in truth with all your heart; for consider what great things He has done for you. (I Samuel 12:22-24)

Samuel was old and reminded them of their past of God's deliverance. He told them of his personal integrity while serving as their judge. Showing their rebellion Samuel called on God. The place was shaken with thunder and lightning. They were stricken with fear and pleaded Samuel to pray for them.

God chose them to be His people. Despite their rebellion at God. They insisted to have a king. This did not change Gods covenant them as His people. He preserved them not based on their merits but sovereign grace. God would not forsake them in honour of His name.

Samuel chose not to sin against God. He would pray for them and teach them the good and right ways. Samuel was a man of prayer, Moses and Aaron were among His priests, And Samuel was among those who called on His name; They called upon the LORD and He answered them. (Psalms 99:6 AMP). Prayer is a labour Epaphras, who is one of you and a bond-servant of Christ Jesus, sends you greetings. [He is] always striving for you in his prayers, praying with genuine concern, [pleading] that you may [as people of character and courage] stand firm, [spiritually mature] and fully assured in all the will of God. (Colossians 4:12 AMP)

Israel chose to fear the LORD, thats to know, respect and honour Him. Out of reverential fear they serve Him according to the truth that Samuel must have taught them. Serving has to be from their heart. It is done with integrity, joy and affection. This will come about as they consider what great things God has done for them.

Prayer: Father God, though in all our imperfections You have chosen us. You have dwelt with me by Your sovereign grace. As I consider that which You have done, I cannot help but serve You wholeheartedly and with great affection. Grant Lord I may pray and teach Your people Your ways lest I sinned against You. Its in prayer we shall fear You and serve You.
