Read 1 Samuel 3 Samuels encounter the LORD

Now the LORD came and stood and called as at other times, Samuel! Samuel! And Samuel answered, Speak, for Your servant hears. (I Samuel 3:10)

For many centuries, Israel had no kings. The people did whatever they deemed right in their own eyes (Judges 17:6; 21:25). The word of the Lord was rarely heard except to those He appointed as judges to deliver and lead His people.

God had blessed Elkanah and Hannah with a son, Samuel. They brought him to Eli for training in the service of the temple. While Samuel was asleep the Lord called his name. However thrice young Samuel mistaken it as Elis call. After the third time, Eli instructed Samuel to respond to the Lord.

Like Samuel, we often have a period of uncertainty regarding what we are being called to do or be. We continue life as usual but the call comes again and this might be repeated numerous times until we finally come to term with God.

Samuel needed Eli to explain to him what these stirrings meant. It often takes others in our lives to aid us in understanding the call God and what He has spoken in fulfilling His purpose.

God's call comes when we least expected it. Some time, we help each other to tell the truth, even when the truth is hard to hear. Such an encounter perhaps is to enter the ministry, a specific task or resolving a certain issue. How has it impacted you upon recollection?

Prayer: Father God, You have given us Your word as Your message to me. Jesus is the Living Word and through it we might see the Lord. By Your Holy Spirit, give me understanding, illumination, through any means by vision, dreams or the counsel of Your children. My heart is centred upon You. Prepare my heart to be receptive and understand what You said. Empower me by Your Spirit to respond appropriately.
