INTRODUCTION

Four parts to this book of Joshua.

Chapters 1-2 Commissioning the leader. Joshua took over the leadership from Moses. Quiet alike Moses; he was encouraged to be strong and good courage. He was directed to cross Jordan as Moses did the Red Sea. He sent spies. Rahab had witnessed the power of God and facilitated the safety of these spies.

Chapters 3-5 Crossing the Jordan. Joshua instructed the priests to set the pace with the Ark and crossed over Jordan. Thereafter he restabilised the covenant by circumcision and celebrating the Passover. He met the Commander of the Lords army and recognised this is the Lords battle. Joshua brought the people into the land that God had promised to them.

Chapters 6-13 Conquests of the land. And he commanded their army in many battles against evil nations. God helped Joshua to win these battles. Joshua's two battles: first battle was the battle of Jericho (Joshua 6) God was faithful to their faith of obedience. Second battle concerns the Israelites failure at Ai because of disobedience. God remained faithful for final victory in their obedience and trust. The Gibeonites deceived them as they took them in without consulting the Lord. Chaps 10-12 list of Canaanites kings and countries conquered.

Chapters 13-22 Claiming the land. Division of the land: total destruction was hyperbole (Deuteronomy 7; Joshua 10:36-39 cp. 15:13-15). Opened to their refugees like Canaanite woman and the Gibeonites.

Chapters 23-24 Closure in commitment. Joshua's two speeches: First, Gods generosity and faithfulness for life and blessings. Second, its their choice if they were to follow God or otherwise.
