Read Colossians 4 Reaching Pre-Believers

Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one. (Colossians 4:6 NKJV)

People can tell where we are from through our speech. Tongue is a vital spiritual sign. What we say can affect others. It's connected with the heart and its powerful both for good or evil. While instructing the Colossian Christians how to engage in conversation with non-believers, Paul issues two imperatives: speak gracious words and season them with salt, always.

Let your speech always be with grace 100% of the time. Grace is the subject matter of our conversation. Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers. The example of Christ 'gracious word'. So all bore witness to Him, and marveled at the gracious words which proceeded out of His mouth. And they said, Is this not Josephs son? Luke 4:22 NKJV). It is word of wisdom grounded in love and holiness.

It is seasoned with salt. Just as it makes meat savoury and agreeable to the palate, so is the words savours the things that be of God. It adds favour and more so it has purifying and preservative effect.

It provides a proper and pertinent answer, with meekness and fear, to such as shall ask a reason of the hope that is in us. Christ knew how to speak with grace to Samaritan woman, Judas, Pilate whether poor or rich. The same as we read of how Peter and John spoke, Paul spoke. The way we speak to the weak, grieving, strong or the poor do we speak with God's cautious? With God seated besides us, before throne of God.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, as Christ spoke to the different ones according to Your intent, grant me the perception to speak as He did. My focus is upon You and I speak of You in mind. Declaring what I said will edify my listener.
