Paul wrote this letter to the church at Philippi (a Roman colony with many patriotic nationalism), which he had established (Acts 16:11-40). They were being persecuted as they would not honor Caesar as Lord Paul was a prisoner when he wrote the book of Philippians.

In writing to the Philippi, his theme was Christ Our Joy.

Chap. 1 Joy in suffering - Christ is expressed. What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretence or in truth, Christ is preached; and in this I rejoice, yes, and will rejoice. (Philippians 1:18)

Paul begins with brief salutation (1:1-2) as his usual address to the believers follow with thanksgiving and prayer (1:3-11). His imprisonment has actually created opportunities to spread the gospel. Their prayers and the provision of the Holy Spirit, he knows all will turn out well for his salvation and deliverance (1:12-26) He inspires them to stand fast together for the Faith without fear of the adversaries (1:27-30) His life defined by the love of Christ. It was an encouragement to other believers!

Chap. 2 Joy in serving - Christ is the example, "Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 2:5). Posture: He proceeds to exhort them to unity by following the example of Christ (2:1-11) and to shine as light (2:12-18). He sets the seven traits of having the mind of Christ and the four actions of Christ. He cites the examples of Timothy and Epaphroditus (2:19-30)

Chap. 3 Joy in seeking - Christ is experienced, "That I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death." (Phil.3:10) Pursuit: Paul warns against Judaism by sharing his own experiences. His conviction in pursuing Christ and knowing Him is by revelation. This brings an attitude of joy. It is not attempting in the flesh to please God and by his own self righteousness (3:1-11). He is not antinomianism (:12-21)

Chap.4 Joy in sharing - Christ is enough, "And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:19) Provision: He appeals to Euodia and Synthche for unity (4:1-3) and so for all believers to be content with joy in prayer as he abounds in his thanksgiving for their generosity (4:4-19). He concluded with praise, farewell greeting and benediction (:20-23)
