INTRODUCTION

Obadiah means worshipper of Yahweh, pronounced judgment on Edom. Probably written after the Babylonian captivity in 585 BC. as it gives description of the destruction of Jerusalem (Obadiah 1:1014) which happened in 586 BC

Two main divisions to the book are

Verses 1 - 16 Destruction of Edom.

The Charge against Edoms pride of their security in their dwelling, their wealth -known for their trade, their own alliance for safe passage, worldly wisdom and their mighty man of war. (vv. 1-9)

The Crime of Edom, were acts of violence, indifference and looting of Israel taking advantage when Israel was been attacked by the Babylonians. (vv. 10-14).

The Catastrophe to Edom, they would reap what they sow to their destruction (vv. 15, 16) Obadiah continued prophecy by explaining that Edoms judgment was but a preview of the coming judgment on all nations. Just as Edom drank wine in Jerusalem in celebration of Judahs defeat, so too would all nations drink in Jerusalem during the Day of the Lord they will be consuming the very wrath of God (cf. Obad. 1:15-16).

Verses 17 -21 Restoration of Israel

Israel would again possess all that was taken from them, destroying Edom (and every other nation) fully and finally, as they enter into the Millennial Kingdom under the rule of King Jesus (cf. Obad. 1:17),

The Condition of Israel with its trials and burdens are only temporary, because they shall see deliverance and possess what is promised them (:17)

Calling of Israel coming against Obadiah looks forward to a coming day when Israel will occupy and possess the land that once belonged to Esau. Israel will be the fire and they will be the stubble, and Edom will be completely devoured (:18)

Consummation of all things. And in the end, the people of Israel would again possess all that was taken from them, destroying Edom (and every other nation) fully and finally, as they enter into the Millennial Kingdom under the rule of King Jesus (vv. 19-21).
