THE HEART BEFORE GOD
Read Psalm 51 David pleads for Mercy
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, A broken and a contrite heart These, O God, You will not despise. (Psalms 51:17 NKJV)
This Psalm was written after David had committed adultery, deception, murder and self-righteousness. He was living in guilt, anxiety, restlessness for covering his sin until Nathan confronted him of the sin. The background is recorded in II Samuel 11-12.
The structure of this Psalm show Davids contrition before God; it gives us an insight of what contrition meant. Notice the 5Rs through the psalm. His repentance by admitting his sin (:1-5). Restoration (:6-9) He seeks God to teach and cleanse him so as to restore the joy. Renewal (:10-15). He seeks God for a clean heart, a spirit of steadfastness, the boldness to teach sinner Gods way and a lip of praise. Receive a new Mission (:16-19). He seeks God for the building of Jerusalem and commit to please God with the sacrifices of righteousness, (:18-19)
David certainly sees the mercy of God for drawing him to see his own hypocrisy and the year of vexation, guilt and fear of been exposed through covering out his sins. Now as he comes to a place of been broken before God, he receives inner healing and see what is pleasing to God.
