WHAT COMMUNION PROCLAMS
Read I Corinthians 11 Worship Gathering
For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lords death till He comes. (I Corinthians 11:26 NKJV)
The partaking of the bread symbolises the Lord's body and the cup representing His blood was instituted the night before He was taken to be crucified. We make three proclamations of what He had done for us each time we partake of the communion.
Proclamation of Christ's death. This was a fulfilment of prophetic acts throughout the Old Testament. Right from Genesis, the slaying of the animal to provide covering for Adam and Eve then the destruction of Satan (Genesis 3:15). Abraham's offering of Isaac. Celebration of Passover in the Exodus. All point to the fact of Christ's death.
Proclamation of God's family. Through His death, He redeemed us and make us His body. "Coming together" is mentioned five times. This refers to us as a body of believers. We proclaim we are brought with a price, Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? (1Corinthians 3:16). We are the Lord's. He is thus the Host.
Proclamation of God's salvation. Believers proclaim to the world what Christ has done. Through His death He has broken the curse of the law, defeated the enemy and being defeated. Rom. 8:32ff (2) Power of Satan being defeated Col. 2 (3) Die to sin daily (4) putting on and off (5) New Life living out of us as He was. Set our affection on things above in anticipation of His return.
Prayer: Lord I can never fathom the depth of Your love for me. That I do proclaim Your death, our unity as a body and our Mission to the world by appropriating Your life through partaking this meal.
