ROMANS [22 SEPTEMBER 2 OCTOBER DAY 266-276]
INTRODUCTION
Paul wrote while he was in Corinth hosted by Gaius (Romans 1:1; 16:23) about 57-58 A.D. It was at the end of his third missionary journey. (Acts 20:2-3). He writes how the gospel of Christ fulfils what is lacking in both heathenism and Judaism, to arm the church at Rome against those who would pervert the gospel as well as to unite the believers who are Jews and Gentile.
Paul begins with a brief personal introduction of himself (Romans 1:1-17) follow with four main divisions that focus on the Gospel.
Chapter 1:18 - 3:20 The need for salvation. Revelation of the sin of man of both the Jews and the Gentiles. They need to be saved. The good news is the death and resurrection of Christ. This is the Gospel that reveals the righteousness of God. His power to save the people and He always does what is just, right and faithful.
Chapter 3:21 - 5:11 The provision for salvation. Revelation of the righteousness of God. This comes with Jesuss death, burial and resurrection. Justification will be given those who trust in Christ, It will be new status, family and future for those justified.
Chapter 5:12 - 8:39 The process of salvation. Sanctification of the saints a new humanity. It is been a part of new humanity. He contrasts between the first Adam and Jesus, the second Adam. New humanity will love God and people. The inadequacy of the Torah and the solution is through Jesus death and resurrection and the Spirit.
Chapter 9 11 The scope of salvation. Gods past dealings with Israel (Chapter 9). Gods present purpose with Israel (Chapter 10) Gods future purpose with Israel (Chapter 11)
Chapter 12 -15:13 The fruit of salvation. This is seen in relationship to God, exercise of spiritual gifts, relationship to those believers or pre-believers and civil authority. Purpose to unite the church. He deals with the ethnic division between the Jews and Gentiles believers.
Following with his concluding remarks and greeting.
